"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several high-profile fans have openly begged for the role.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best groups, they're a close trio. Their videos frequently show them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics follow departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to actively work on shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

However Haim will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
