Each time a major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
