Administration officials confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
